Al Gore bommet totalt med dyster klimaspådom i 2007
I 2007 fremmet USAs tidligere visepresident Al Gore dystre klimaspådommer i en dokumentarfilm. Med tiden har det imidlertid blitt klart at særlig en spådom ble en total skivebom.
I filmen «An Inconvenient Truth» (En ubehagelig sannhet) fra 2006 advarte Gore om konsekvensene av global oppvarming. Blant annet hevdet han at snøen ville være helt borte fra Afrikas høyeste fjell, Kilimanjaro, i løpet av 2010-tallet. Denne spådommen medførte at folk reiste i hopetall for å bestige fjellet, for å oppleve et snødekket Kilimanjaro før det var for sent. Dette skriver The Times, og gjengis av Nettavisen.
Geolog Douglas R. Hardy ved University of Massachusetts var én av flere forskere som spådde at snøen ville være borte fra Kilimanjaro i løpet av 2010-tallet. Han sa i et intervju i 2011 at han angret på denne spådommen, ifølge nettavisen MassLive.
– Ingen av oss hadde mye erfaring med fjellet, og det var mye vi ikke forstod av den kompliserte prosessen på fjelltoppen da, som vi forstår nå, sa han.

Uvanlig mye snø i 2018
Flere klimaforskere har tidligere spådd at all snøen på Kilimanjaro ville være helt borte innen inngangen til 2020-tallet. Den siste måneden har det imidlertid vært mye snø på fjelltoppen. I 2018 ble det registrert uvanlig mye snøfall på Afrikas høyeste fjell.
Al Gore er likevel fortsatt svært engasjert i kampen mot klimaendringer. Da han i januar var på plass sammen med verdens rike og mektige under World Economic Forum i Davos i Sveits, gjentok han sine konstateringer om at klimaendringene vil bli langt verre enn mange innser, og det det vil skje langt raskere enn det folk forstår og vil sette pris på.
