Iskanten i Barentshavet er langt sør
NRK forteller i et oppslag fra april at det har aldri vært så mye CO2 i luften siden de moderne målingene startet på Mauna Loa på Hawai. Men de forteller ikke at isgrensen i Barentshavet april i år er langt sør. Det kan bety kaldere klima i Nord Europa.
Figuren under er lastet ned fra Meteorologisk institutts istjeneste den 10. april 2023 og viser isgrensen den 5. april i år. Rødt betyr svært tett drivis, orange tett drivis og gult åpen drivis. Vanligvis brukes 15% drivis som en praktisk grense for drivisen. Det ser ut som om det er mer is i år enn det var i 1769, siden farvannet nord for Svalbard nå er helt stengt, mens det var åpent i fjor på denne tiden og i 1769. I år er det også tendens til is på vestsiden av Svalbard slik som det var før 2005. Isen rekker helt ned til Bjørnøya, slik at isbjørnen fint kan gå i land der også.
Et arbeide av russiske forskere (Boitsov m. fl. 2012)1 viste at lufttemperaturen på Bjørnøya var 1 grad under normalen på 1960-tallet, mens den i perioden 2000-2010 var 1,5 grader over normalen. Det vises i figuren til venstre.

De samme forskerne lagde også en temperaturindeks for Barentshavet, som en blanding av luft-temperatur, havtemperatur og ismengde, og fant at denne varierte syklisk med en varmeperiode 1930-60 og fra 1990-. Indeksen skulle holde seg på topp til 2015 og deretter minke noe som betyr mer is og kaldere i nord. Denne indeksen er gjengitt nedenfor:

Et større forskningsarbeide av Solheim, Falk-Pedersen, Humlum og Mörner (2021) har tolket variasjonene i iskantens beliggenhet som en følge av klimasvingninger. De undersøkte beliggenheten av iskanten i august gjennom 440 år, og fant at den var langt nord i perioden 2010-2020, men å vise noen trend. De presentere en enkel modell som viser at iskanten kan komme til å bevege seg sørover mellom 2020 og 2060.
Forskere ved Bjerknesinstituttet i Bergen har beregnet ut fra klimamodeller at iskanten vil bevege seg sørover de nærmeste årene og at dette vil gjøre temperaturen på våre breddegrader holder seg stable eller viser en svak nedgang de nærmeste årens slik som i hiatus perioden 1950-1970. Det er derfor fortsatt mulighet for godt skiføre i påsken de neste 50 årene.
