Zharkova: Mot en global nedkjøling
Valentina Zharkova er professor i fysikk og matematikk, tilknyttet Northumbria universitet. Hun hevder at sola har gått inn i et moderne Grand Solar Minimum som vil vare fra 2020 til 2053. Det vil i likhet med Maunder minimum (ca. 1645-1710) føre til et merkbart temperaturfall på jorda.

Solas aktivitet kommer til uttrykk i form av sykliske 11-årige variasjoner i antall solflekker på overflaten, som igjen reflekterer endringer i solas indre. Syklusene er registrert siden 1755. Solflekksyklus 24 er nettopp avsluttet som en av de svakeste på over 100 år.

Det er fastslått at vi har gått inn i syklus 25. Selv NASA erkjenner at den vil ha lavere aktivitet «enn gjennomsnittet».
Hva er konsekvensene på jorda av redusert solaktivitet?
Ifølge Zharkova sank solas totale utstråling under Maunder Minimum med 0,22 prosent. Ikke mye, men nok til et temperaturfall på i gjennomsnitt 1-1,5 grader. Vintrene var lange og kalde, somrene kjølige. I Europa og Nord-Amerika vokste isbreene og slukte tidligere jordbruksland. Isdekke på elver som Themsen og Donau og de berømte kanalene i Nederland var vanlig vinterstid.

Zharkova anslår at temperaturen i vår tid vil kunne falle med inntil 1 grad i løpet av de tre solflekksyklusene 25-27. Det er omtrent 0,4 grader høyere enn ved utgangen av Maunder minimum. Deretter mener hun at solaktiviteten vil normaliseres i syklus 28 ca. fra 2053.
Hun konkluderer bl.a. med at temperaturfallet de neste 30 år kan få alvorlige følger for vegetasjon, jordbruk, matvareforsyning, og behov for oppvarming både på den nordlige og den sørlige halvkule.
Det kan i tre tiår oppheve alt av global oppvarming, og tvert om kreve internasjonal innsats for å takle problemer med kulde og derav svikt i matproduksjonen.
